The John Harris Mansion was built in 1766 by John Harris, Jr., the founder of Harrisburg, PA. Before the Dauphin County Historical Society took it over in 1941, the Mansion had eight different owners, including Simon Cameron, President Abraham Lincoln's first Secretary of War, who bought and enlarged it in 1863. The Susquehanna River, across Front Street from the Mansion, can be seen in the window reflection.
