The first known lighthouse at Cape May, NJ was built in 1823. A new one was erected in 1847, but due to the encroaching sea and poor building design it was dismantled. Using bricks from the original 1847 lighthouse, a new 157-foot-high lighthouse was built in 1859 and is still an aid to navigation. Visitors who climb the 199 steps to the top are rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the scenic Cape May peninsula.
