About the artist
When I was a child, the best Christmas gifts I could get were coloring books and crayons, modeling clay or anything that encouraged creativity. I was 12 when my father bought me my first camera, a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. In eighth grade, I joined the high school Photography Club, and that's when I decided to pursue photography as my main creative outlet.
Early on, most of my photography involved filling albums with family pictures, but today I enjoy broadening my horizons and building a portfolio. While subject matter varies, capturing the beauty and complexity of nature is my main interest, whether it is a wide-angle landscape or seascape or close-up of the smallest wildlife.
I do not have a work or education background related to the field of art. My knowledge base has been developed through hands-on trial and error, attending seminars and workshops, and constructive criticism from a few mentors along the way. I love experimenting in the field as well as working with Photoshop and other image editing programs.
Photography inspires me for several reasons. First, I create something that is understood universally. There are over 6,000 spoken languages on planet Earth, but a simple picture can speak a thousand words with no lost translations. Anyone who views a photograph may be moved, offended or indifferent, but we have connected.
Second, the camera, which narrows the field of vision, has actually expanded my vision and awareness. It persuades me to slow down and pay attention to the brilliance of nature and life's many treasures. I capture moments in time and document pieces of my world I might otherwise never see.
Third, I want to make and leave marks for my children and grandchildren. An image I capture today may still be on a child's wall 20 years after his or her child goes off to college. Image making leaves a legacy.
Finally, while I love capturing the moment to share with others, I also look forward to sharing it with myself at a later time. A subject or scene which would otherwise get forgotten becomes like an old friend when I sit back and view it months or years down the road.
My work has displayed at art shows and fine art galleries and has won awards at the local and state level, including the annual state-wide "Art of the State" juried exhibition at the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg. I reside in South Central (Camp Hill) Pennsylvania USA.
