Description
Two people approach the historic Walnut Street Bridge during a mid-winter snow squall.
(Constructed in 1889, the Walnut Street Bridge connecting Harrisburg, PA to City Island in the Susquehanna River is the oldest surviving bridge over the Susquehanna. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes permanently rendered the bridge structurally unsafe for automobiles. In 1996, it was damaged again, when a storm caused two spans on the western half to break off completely. Although it no longer fully crosses the river to the western bank, the Walnut Street Walking Bridge is one of the longest and most popular pedestrian bridges in the country, carrying more than one million people between Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park and City Island Park each year.)
